FAQs:
Who should apply for this course? Students in grades 6 - 12 who have a big idea to share. Students 18 or under who are enrolled in college programs like the UW Robinson School or Running Start are welcome to apply. What's the application deadline? Applications for our spring 2024 course leading to TEDxBallardYouth are now closed. Is financial aid available? Yes! A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available and will be offered on a rolling basis. Applying early is highly recommended. Information and the scholarship application is included at the end of the main application. Seatown Story Project does not require any corroborating financial documents such as proof of income; we only ask that you help us understand your situation. Scholarship applications are evaluated by our Seatown Story Collective's team and a diverse committee of educators and youth advocates. We believe that artistic excellence is best achieved by bringing as many different voices to the table as possible. To that end, our scholarship committee especially welcomes applications from storytellers who have been historically underrepresented in the literary arts. When and where are the classes? Classes are on Saturdays, March 2 - May 18, 2024, from 9:00am - 12:00pm at the University of Washington in the Brooklyn Trail Building (3897 Brooklyn Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105). There will be no class on Saturday, April 6 for spring break. When and where is the showcase TEDxBallardYouth event? Saturday, March 25, 2024 at the Ballard Branch of the Seattle Public Library (5614 22nd Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107). This public event will be in the afternoon. This event will be open to the public. Can I take this course but not participate in the showcase event? Our hope is that all students selected for our TED-Ed Student Talks course will be excited to deliver their talk at TEDxBallardYouth! Will my TEDx talk be recorded? Yes. Guardians for students who are under 18 will need to sign a waiver to give SSC permission to record and share youth talks. How does this TED-Ed Student Talks course fit with my school learning goals? All Seatown Story Collective courses are designed around whole-student learning objectives inspired by 21st century skills. You can learn more about the specific whole-student skills Seatown Story Collective's TED-Ed Student Talks course emphasizes on our About page. These skills have been identified by the International Baccalaureate, the International Society for Technology in Education, and Asia Society Global Leadership Performance Outcomes. How many students will be accepted into this TED-Ed Student Talks course? We are limiting this first cohort to approximately twelve students. Teacher to student ratio will be ~1:5. Because of the limited availability of spots and that applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, applying early is highly recommended. Will lunch be provided? Please bring your own sack lunch to Saturday classes. What short answer questions are on the application? You can view and complete the full application here. There are two short answer questions: 1) Write a pitch for a TED-style talk that you would be excited to craft and deliver. 2) Why do you want to be part of this TED-Ed Student Talks course with Seatown Story Collective? Applicants are also asked to share a three-sentence bio. Where can I find application tips? This Instagram post is what you're looking for. Where can I read examples of TEDxYouth talk pitches? We've got you. Here's two: PITCH 1: Three Things I Learned About Life Through Being Part of Seattle's Hula Community In my talk, I aim to explore hula in a modern setting, unraveling the dance and Seattle's AAPI community's impact on my journey as a Native Hawaiian American. From strengthening my cultural roots to stepping into the spotlight with newfound confidence, and embracing resilience through mastering a challenging dance form, hula has transformed my life. I'll share the rich history of hula, its ties to Hawaii's past, myths, and spirituality. I'll also explore the diverse and inclusive tapestry of Seattle's hula community, urging audience members to connect with their cultural roots. Now, why this talk? Seattle, with its tight-knit Hawaiian community, needs to hear the untold stories, especially when AAPI voices are often overlooked. Let's break barriers and dance into a world where cultural connections matter. PITCH 2: How Students Turned Waste Into Innovation at Aviation High School Students at Aviation High School are turning waste into innovation. In my talk, I'll unravel the incredible journey of our student-led recycling program, showcasing the power of youth-driven initiatives. From boosting our recycling rate from 28% to 36%, to the science and engineering behind it, our success story emphasizes the impact of student leaders and collaboration in fostering sustainability. By having a student from Aviation deliver this talk, we embody how young minds can drive meaningful change in our school and community, sparking inspiration for more youth-led initiatives. Why now? Seattle's eco-friendly spirit and growing climate concerns make it the perfect time to share our impactful story. Can I submit more than one application? No. Only one application per student please. Applications cannot be updated once they are submitted. Drafting and polishing responses to the short answer questions is highly recommended.
